The
British are known for being very polite, conservatives and punctuals,
but a feature that few know is that their lives revolves around
superstition which are beliefs that a certain phenomenon has an
explanation mystical, magical or simply assumed cultural, social or
religiously without any scientific evidence.
For
example British think they have good luck if they meet a black
cat...very opposite of what we believe in Chile, right?. Actually black
cats are featured on many good luck greetings cards and birthday cards
in England. Another way to get good luck is touching wood...we touch,
knock on wood, to make something come true.
Related
to the bad luck , they consider that if you see one magpie you would
have a lot of problems, on the contrary if you see two happiness will
come to you.
Also
they believe that you have to think twice if you want to put new shoes
on the table or if you pass someone on the stairs, because this two
actions would make your life a drama.
Definitely superstitions are a part of British culture today and although superstition was more alive a hundred years ago, there are still superstitious people around, both young and old, but what do you think?...Do you believe that they can influence our lives and still live on in the age of science?
